Mark Mason recently had his streak of more than 900 Portland Trail Blazers basketball games broken thanks blood clots in his leg.  The streak included preseason and playoffs in addition to the regular season.

“Frustrating, because I’ve had more fun calling games this season than ever before,” says Mason, 61. “I was having just as much fun as everybody else and looking forward to every game. Then this happens. It’s like, ’Not now.’ But there’s never a good time for something like this.”

Mason has been the voice of the team for over 20 years and went through another scary situation four years ago when he had to undergo an abdominal aneurysm repair.  Since then, he’s walked two miles every day.

It was during one of those walks a-week-and-a-half ago that he started losing function in his right leg.  His wife called 911 and a surgeon in the emergency room determined the stent received during the procedure four years ago had failed.

Following a fasciotomy, Mason was in intensive care for three days and another four in the hospital before returning home with a walker.

Mason, who is also the host of a popular afternoon show on KPAM 860-AM, is unsure of his return behind either the broadcast or P. A. microphone.

Mark, get better soon, don’t rush it, and we’ll see you back as soon as you can make it!
