It takes someone with good concentration to really understand how to do everything at once.  It’s best to understand the sport and the rules so you know when to start/stop the clock.  Some sports, like soccer, field hockey, women’s lacrosse, baseball or softball are easier to do while basketball and hockey can offer some harrowing situations, but it’s done…a lot.

Myths:  You Can’t Run the Scoreboard and Announce at the Same Time

For the last 13 years, I’ve announced the National Capital Hockey Tournament, a high school hockey tournament in the DC area that music is also played during stoppages.  Over the first few years, there were some games where the scoreboard would get pushed to me, but for the most part I was teaching parents how to run it.  That was more stressful than actually running the scoreboard as well.

Next week:  If you do a good job, nobody will say anything

  • You will only hear fan feedback if you’re doing a bad job.
  • A good announcer is one who isn’t noticed.*
  • The music doesn’t matter.
