John Franzone has seen a World Series, an inaugural game and season, a Stanley Cup, and hung out with Mickey Mouse in his career that’s taken him from the New York Yankees, Disney, Tampa Bay Devil Rays and finally Tampa Bay Lightning. Mix in there a Frozen Four and a few other high profile events, and one would have to say that there’s more to sports on Florida’s left coast than the Buccaneers.
It’s his work creating and directing the show for the Lightning that gets all the attention. You know, that team with the gigantic center-ice scoreboard, Franzone is behind that. The team with the Tesla coils to create actual lighting, yep Franzone again. A million dollar organ with laser beams, yessir Mr. Franzone comes up with another winner. Hat trick!
He didn’t start out in hockey, that came after many years that saw him start with the New York Yankees and qualified his skills to be the man in charge for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays when they entered Major League Baseball in 1998. Long hours are nothing new to this sports-lifer who has been given the moniker, “Prince of Darkness” for his creations in the dark preceding Lightning home games. Please take a few minutes to watch the video below.
One of the things Franzone does is get the best out of those working for him by setting a precise schedule that takes hours of foresight to set-up along with a knowledge of all parts of the show. From the DJ, to P. A. announcer, to the camera operators, in-game host and everyone who has a hand on “the show”, Franzone has the right people in the right places to put on such a great show.
