The Lehigh Valley Phantoms are one of the more interesting stories in the American Hockey League with how they came to wind up where they are today. They started as the Philadelphia Phantoms, playing at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, which was located in the same parking lot as the home arena of their NHL affiliate, Philadelphia Flyers. After being forced to move to Glens Falls, New York, the team finally found their new home in Allentown.
The Morning Call: Lehigh Valley Phantoms P. A. announcer fires up fans
That’s where Joe Wowk, a native of Northeast Philadelphia continues his ties to the organization, where he became a fan of the team back in their Philadelphia days. He went to games and became an instant fan. He was there when the Phantoms won the Calder Cup, the AHL’s equivalent of the Stanley Cup.
Wowk earned the job by doing the footwork necessary, sending emails, going on audition, and being there when the other finalist bowed out at the last minute. Talk about sticking to your guns and going for it. Great job Joe.
