Playing for Norfolk Catholic (Nebraska) in 2009, he had plenty of opportunity to listen to the P. A. announcer as it was obvious he wasn’t going to get in the game. Doc Winiger, the University of Nebraska football P. A. announcer was on the mic for this game and his voice put a bug into Mills’ ear.
After getting home, he kept watching the game that he’d recorded and listening to the legendary voice, eventually giving himself the confidence that he could’ve done the game.
It wasn’t until he arrived at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota, that he started to emphasize dormmates names with some inflection. He even went to some junior varsity basketball games and volunteered to announce. Door…open. The administration asked him back and since then he’s announced football, volleyball and tournament games.
Mills is now a graduate student with an awesome talent who hopes to be an athletic direction in the NCAA in the future.
